Electric EM90 is the ultimate boxy Volvo
Volvo expands its line up in more ways than one with an MPV called the EM90.
The Swedish brand known for its saloons and wagons, and more recently its SUVs, is curiously expanding its range with an MPV. The all-new EM90 is a first for Volvo, and before you start thinking of a Stockholm airport shuttle, they have instead dived straight in at the luxury end of things.
The EM90 features three-row seating, but it’s the centre row where that matters, featuring two reclining captain’s chairs that wouldn’t look out of place in a private jet. Mounted from the roof is a 15.6-inch screen that passengers can use for entertainment or video calls should they need to turn the EM90 into a mobile office.
Don’t think other passengers are left out, either. Up front is a similarly huge 15.4-inch infotainment display, and 21 speakers, courtesy of Bowers & Wilkins, are dotted throughout the cabin, likening the experience to having your own private lounge or concert hall. There is also plenty of tech with 5G connectivity, high-definition cameras, and a voice assistant system.
While this is a new entry from Volvo, it shares much of its DNA with the Zeekr 009, a similarly sized MPV within the Geely Group. Sitting on air suspension and powered by a 116kWh battery, it has a range of 738 kilometres under CLTC testing. When fully deploying all 200kWs of power available, 0-100km/h appears in 8.3 seconds. It also has bi-directional charging capability and can recharge from 10 to 80 per cent in under 30 minutes.
Although it’s hard to associate this vehicle shape with Volvo, the designers have done a good job integrating signature design cues to ensure it’s instantly recognisable. Up front, the Volvo badge is illuminated, signifying its move towards electrification. The Thor’s Hammer lights, as Volvo calls them, tie the appearance together for a look that feels familiar even on first viewing.
The Volvo EM90 is destined exclusively for the Chinese market for now. Volvo could offer the EM90 to European consumers if there is sufficient demand from customers looking for a blend of versatility and luxury all wrapped up in the safety-conscious packaging they’ve come to expect from the brand.
