Volkswagen Golf Mk 7 launches in Ireland

The new Volkswagen Golf today went on sale in Ireland. The seventh generation aims to once again become the benchmark to which others are measured against. Volkswagen have outlined a fairly comprehensive range of Golfs that will come with three different trim levels: Trendline, Comfortline and Highline. To go with these will be three different petrol engines and two diesel.

Those engines will start with a 85 hp 1.2 TSI petrol and will also come in a 105 hp form. The next step up will be to the 140 hp 1.4 TSI petrol, although this will only be available in the Highline trim level and also comes with ACT (Active Cylinder Technology) which allows two of its four cylinders to shut down during economical driving helping to save fuel. The diesel engines will consist of a 1.6 TDI with 105 hp and a 2.0 TDI with 150 hp, the latter of which will also only be available in the Highline trim level.

Using the new MQB platform which also underpins the new Audi A3, Seat Leon and Skoda Octavia enables the Golf to not only be longer and wider but also to be lighter and more spacious inside. It also is safer thanks to standard features which include seven airbags including a driver’s knee airbag, three-point seat belts  all round as well as two ISOFIX points in the rear, XDS electronic differential lock as well as improved ABS & ESP systems.

On Trendline Golfs a 5 inch colour touchscreen radio will come as standard which also has an SD card slot in addition to the MP3 compatible CD drive. Another standard feature across all trim levels is the electronic parking brake which is a first across the Golf range. Comfortline standard features include cruise control, bluetooth, a higher spec touchscreen display, USB interface and 15′ alloy wheels. The step up to the Highline trim gains 16″ alloy wheels, front fog lights, black radiator grille with chrome mouldings, electric folding mirrors, sports front seats and a 3-spoke leather multifunction steering wheel all as standard. The price difference to go between each trim level in Ireland will be €1,650 per level. The new Golf’s pricing will start at €19,995.

Commenting at the launch of the new car, Volkswagen Group Ireland Managing Director Simon Elliott said that the new Golf is now an integral part of Irish motoring. “The Golf has been on sale here in Ireland for over three decades and has always been a top-seller,” said Elliott. “This latest generation car is bigger, cleaner and safer than ever before and we are delighted to be announcing such competitive pricing for the new car.”
